What is a Mastermind Group?

The concept of the Mastermind Group was formally introduced by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900's. In his timeless classic, "Think And Grow Rich" he wrote about the Mastermind principle as: "The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony."

A Mastermind Group of individuals work together to help each other overcome challenges and achieve their goals.  There is a synergy of energy, commitment, and excitement that people bring to a mastermind group.  Success outcomes are multiplied by challenging each member to create and implement goals, brainstorm ideas, and support and encourage one another with total honesty, respect and compassion.

A mastermind group is like having an objective board of directors, a success team, and a peer advisory group, all rolled into one.

What are the Benefits of being a part of a Mastermind Group?

  • Support, encouragement and commitment. You will be part of an exclusive and supportive community. Joining a mastermind typically involves you being invited by the members or going through an application process. Members need you just as much as you need them, so quality of experience and knowledge is critical to all involved.

  • Resources. Everyone in your group will have access to a different skill set, knowlege base and experiences, as well as, a network of people. Combined resources help each member make progress in ways they never could by themselves.

  • Accountability. Matermind members hold each other accountable to following through on the goals they set. In addition, just knowing that you have a regularly scheduled meeting internally drives you to complete goals – because you don’t want to be the only person reporting back that you haven’t made an effort to move your projects forward.

  • Advisement. Once you are involved in a mastermind, that feeling of “being alone” while running your business no longer exists. Members of the group turn into business advisors. Members of your mastermind are people who really understand what is going on behind the scenes, and give you support in spite of any failed efforts. Failed efforts are seen as progress toward success because you can't fail at something you did not commit to accomplishing.

  • Differing perspectives. Everyone in the mastermind is unique in skill, experience and connections. By interacting and sharing your challenges, it’s almost certain that someone in your mastermind will have a solution for you and you may also be able to offer a solution, connection or tactic to help another in the group. These differing perspectives can be exactly what you need to find solutions to problems  you are facing.  What seems impossible to figure out for you, might be an easy fix for another member with differing talents and skills.

  • Collaboration is the name of the game. You may find someone in the group that is a perfect fit to work on a project with you. Or, you may be the perfect person to help another member as well. The group works together collaboratively, to achieve more together.

  • Extend your network. Joining a mastermind expands your network exponentially and rapidly. If you are in business, you know how important your network is. By joining a mastermind, you instantly add to your network and typically gain the networks of those in the group with you.

  • Cross-promotion. When you join a mastermind, you will most likely find ways to help each other by utilizing cross promotion. Finding ways to help each other through promoting to your respective networks. It is never just who you know, it is who the people you know might know that can often serve you best.

  • Think bigger.  When you join a mastermind, you can’t help but think bigger and stretch beyond your boundaries because you are surrounded by amazing people doing amazing things. Masterminds are vehicles that can take you further than you, by yourself, thought you could go. Growing in a group is not only more effective, it’s more enjoyable!
